Character graphics and knitwear are a natural pair: both are built on a grid. A pixel-style creature and a knitted beanie share the same logic of squared units forming a picture, which is why an image that looks blocky on screen can look intentional on a hat. Knit Gauge Decides How Much Detail Survives

When a buyer sends artwork, the first question is not "can you knit it" but "how much of it will still read at arm's length". Knitting resolution is set by gauge — the number of needles and the yarn count — and every graphic gets translated into a grid before it goes on the machine. Three rules guide the translation:

• Fine rib knits carry flat artwork well: thin outlines and block lettering hold their edges because the stitch columns stay narrow and even.
• One stitch equals one pixel: details narrower than two or three stitches blur into the surrounding color, so eyes, claws and tight icons are usually redrawn slightly larger.
• Color count has a limit: each additional yarn color adds machine time, so artwork is normally simplified to two or three colors for knitwear rather than reproduced at full illustration depth.

Pixel-style artwork works with these limits instead of against them. The grid look is part of the design language, so the knit structure reads as a deliberate style rather than a loss of resolution.

Graphic Placement on a Cuffless Dome

A cuffless beanie has no folded band to hide behind, so the artwork has to be positioned around the shape of the crown itself.

• Stay clear of the crown closure — the upper two to three centimetres, where the panels are linked, cannot hold a clean graphic.
• Keep the artwork above the wear line — we place the graphic so that the lower third of the cap stays solid color, which is the area that stretches when the hat is pulled on.
• Offset or centre — a centred graphic suits symmetrical logos, while an offset placement like the one in our photo set gives a streetwear look and leaves room for a woven label on the opposite side.
• Match the flat width — artwork is sized against the relaxed width of the panel, not the stretched width, so the proportions stay correct when the hat is worn.

For dark yarns we plan contrast carefully: light artwork on black needs a denser stitch so the graphic edges stay crisp, while dark artwork on a mid-tone ground can use a lighter yarn weight and still stay readable. Combined with a hand-linked closure and needle detection on every batch, this keeps the graphic consistent across the order.
